Instead of using a hypertext technique to move to
any point in a long document or even to another
document, I am now exploring its use for rapid
access to small extension notes attached to any
word on a given page.
I see its use here not so much as a support for
extensive reading, in which a hypertext link may be
to a remote point in a text, but as a tool to
assist in detailed study of a short text.
It could be useful in an area such as foreign
language learning, as I attempt to illustrate in
the two 'Scientific French' examples I have
provided, Science1 and Science2.
Typically a study page will have several high-
lighted chunks of text, not at all like the one
you are reading now, which has merely a documentary
function.
